More cats need more resources
One oversized tray is rarely an adequate substitute for multiple litter locations. A widely used starting rule is one box per cat plus one extra, placed in separate, accessible areas rather than lined up as a single station. This gives cats choice and prevents one confident cat from controlling access. Large or multi-level homes may need additional locations.
Choose fast clumping for frequent use
In a busy tray, clumps must form quickly enough to lift before they are broken by another cat. Clean Step Air Lock Hybrid and ball-grain bentonite offer clumping-led options, while carbon formats add an adsorption story. Evaluate performance after repeated liquid loads, not only a single demonstration. The right litter should leave limited wet residue on the tray base after careful scooping.
Control odor in layers
Scoop at least twice daily and more often when several cats share a room. Replace lost depth with fresh litter, wash waste tools and keep tied waste away from indoor heat. Clean Step deodorizer granules can be mixed through the litter as directed. Its deodorizing spray may support suitable surrounding surfaces, but it should not replace litter removal or be used in a way not stated on the label.
Watch for health and behavior signals
A strong new odor can result from diet, intact male spraying, box avoidance or illness. If one cat urinates outside the box, strains, vocalizes or visits repeatedly, arrange veterinary care. Do not punish spraying; clean residual odor and address stress, territory and resource distribution. A cleaner home begins with a setup that every cat is willing and able to use.
